Tyrone ran around my apartment in his little ball while I did some cleaning tonight. I keep my ears open when I let him do this, making sure that every fifteen seconds or so, I hear the whack of plastic against the wall or a piece of furniture. Early in the cleaning process, I picked up the rugs to sweep the bathroom floor, and when I turned around to put them outside the room, there was Tyrone, crawling around on the carpet! The lid had come off of his ball, and he was having a blast! Fortunately, I'd caught him right after this had happened, so I was able to scoop him up quickly and place him back in the ball. I made sure the lid was on tight, and proceeded to clean, keeping my ears alert for that familiar whacking noise.
La la la...cleaning...in the kitchen, wiping down the counter and I think "He's been awfully quiet..." I come around the corner, into my dining room, and this is what I see:
Hamster on the loose! He was nowhere in sight...he could be ANYWHERE! I have not hamster proofed my apartment, because I have no intention of allowing him to roam about freely...so, there are tons of nooks and crannies he could have crawled into, and plenty of exposed wires he could chew on...oh. my. gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawd!!
I scrambled about frantically looking for him and soon found him hidden underneath my desk...let me tell you, it was no simple task getting him to come out from under the desk, and then grab him (he's a fast little bugger!)...but, I did, and promptly put him back in his cage.
After seeing this video, I'm convinced he's figured out how to open the ball...

Tyrone is a smart little guy 'eh....
I'm glad you were able to find him
He got loose a few weeks ago too, and after that, I looked for alternative types of balls, but couldn't find any... I guess I'll just have to be more supervisory while he's in it! :-(
I can just see him now...trying to figure the door out...LOL
That video was hilarious by the way.
Right?!
And the way he/she pops the door off in the third clip - almost like "heh - this is nothin' - I'm outta here!" lol
That video is crazy. He totally knocks the plug out of the wall! LOL
I've never encountered a single escape attempt with Miles. After he warmed up to me, I let him roam around freely on the sofa and in the hall on he hardwoord floor. No problemo. He's also famous for crawling up my chest and falling asleep on the back on my neck/chair. When he was younger, he rolled around in his ball everywhere. Saturday night, I locked him in while I cleaned out his tank ... 20 minutes later he was still sitting in the same spot where I left him. Maybe he got bored with it? Maybe he suffers from newly onset motion sickness? Regardless the reason, he has definitely slowed his roll.
(your empty ball is hilarious!)
Man, you're lucky - Tyrone is always looking for a way to get away...or maybe he just likes to explore... He lets me hold him now, with no problem, but he never sits still. (Although, occasionally, he'll crawl up on my shoulder and stand, pressed against my neck for about ten seconds.) Sometimes I put him in the ball, and he just sits there, but other times he goes to town!
Maybe my guy will mellow with age too? (He is only about 4 months old at this point.)
Say - did you see my comment last week, with the question about how you clean your tank??
